In light of recent research on Homeric slavery, this lecture addresses a hitherto little-noticed aspect of the figure of Eurycleia. It begins from the observation that, in order to function as Odysseus’ wet nurse, Eurycleia must already have borne a child of her own. Since an “irregular” birth is hardly conceivable in the case of a paradigmatically loyal slave woman, and since the Odyssey, at her first appearance, explicitly emphasizes that she entered the household of Laertes in her early youth and that he never shared her bed (Od. 1.428–433), it would have been natural for Homer’s audience to fill the biographical gap between Eurycleia’s early youth and her later role as Odysseus’ wet nurse by drawing both on epic parallels and on their everyday experience. Accordingly, Eurycleia was likely given by Laertes in marriage to a fellow slave.
